BLACK DIAMOND MINE TOUR '09

The Black Diamond mine trip was attended by 10 adventurous rock hounds. They were treated to a 1-1/2 hour tour of the mine. A new area has been opened which gave a much better understanding of how difficult the mining was in the 1800's. Miners as young as 8 years old were used in the mine. They were known as knobbers, and had to crawl on their hands and knees to push the coal down the stopes to the loading chutes. They were paid $10 per week for 12 to 14 hour days. During the tour we were able to walk across an earth quake fault, see fossilized ripples in the beach sand, fossilized tubes, sand crabs and other such critters. After the tour we all enjoyed a picnic lunch and tour of the visitors center before returning home. AL TROGLIN.
